Berzerk - Vison Left Behind

about

The first time I met Chad Sellers…
Once upon a time Andy Harris (Thrasher Magazine/Channel St. Skatepark (and my friend from kindergarten)) and I went on a skateboarding trip up the coast in his old blue Toyota truck. At the time we were both writing for Thrasher and we knew we would get free shit if we showed up… so what the hell, let’s do this! This was also about the time that the really cool big flowy skateparks started popping up in Oregon, most famous would be Burnside (First of its kind and our inspiration for later building Channel Street in San Pedro) so Oregon was a must. I called our friend Tyler from Berzerk (PDX, OR) and he said we could crash at his pad. He also said I could meet the new Berzerk drummer, Chad. Tyler was to set up a jam session for me (Recess Records liaison) to check out the new songs. This was obviously after the Berzerk 7inch but I have no idea what year, ???? [Todd, can you guess a year?] Andy and I showed up pretty beat down, I’m sure, from our bender in S.F. but we were young so I’m sure we also showed up drunk. It was such a long time ago but I can actually remember pulling up and seeing my old friend Tyler flagging us down (this was before GPS and way before cell phones, by the way). I think Chad was working or something so we went and got Taco Bell and 40oz. bottles of Old English (that was the Berzerk diet for YEARS!). When Chad finally showed up he was pretty serious, or maybe nervous, and instantly set up and sat down at the drums. They went through a few songs, from what I remember and I was instantly impressed with his fancy footwork on the kick drum. After the boys were done “showing off” I remember Chad trying to teach my drunken ass how to do the double-kick the way he does it (I pinched my toe). He was always the nicest dude with patience for days. The rest of the night was a blur but we talked and told stories as we always do. I woke up in barf. It wasn’t my barf and it wasn’t barf from the night before, as Tyler later explained to me. It was a “young dude pad” so they didn’t know or have the proper tools to clean up said barf-spot on the carpet. It was just old vomit that I called pillow for the night. So nothing too crazy, just dudes hanging with dudes. My love for Chad came from years and years of him being a tremendous friend. Always reaching out, always coming down to Pedro with or without a tour. As much as he may or may not have looked up to me, I definitely looked up to him. He was always his own dude. You couldn’t talk him into doing something he thought was mean or wrong. I never had a chance to tell him that sappy stuff but I hope he just knew it. I also never had a chance to go fishing with him and his dad (I took him out a few times on my dad’s boat). We never did catch that shark. Gone but never forgotten!
